Collins effect and single spin azimuthal asymmetries in the HERMES and COMPASS experiments

چکیده
Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries A sinφ UL from a longitudinally polarized target. The single spin asymmetries AUT from the transversely polarized proton target are found to be about 20% for positive and neutral pions both at HERMES and COMPASS. For a longitudinally polarized target we obtain for COMPASS A sinφ UL ∼ 1% and A sin 2φ UL ∼ 3%.

Sivers vs. Collins effect in azimuthal single spin asymmetries in pion production in SIDIS
Recently it has been argued that the transverse momentum dependent twist-2 Sivers distribution function does not vanish in QCD. Therefore both, the Collins and Sivers effects, should be considered in order to explain the azimuthal single spin asymmetries AUL in pion production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton scattering of a longitudinally polarized target. On the basis of presently av...
متن کاملNew target transverse spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries from COMPASS experiment
Abstract. In general, eight target transverse spin-dependent azimuthal modulations are allowed in semi inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons on a transversely polarized target. In the QCD parton model four of these asymmetries can be interpreted within the leading order approach. Two of them, namely Collins and Sivers effects were already measured by HERMES and COMPASS experi...

The recent data on the transverse single spin asymmetry A sin(φ h +φ S) UT from HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions. A fit of SIDIS data from HERMES Collaboration is performed leading to the extraction of favoured and unfavoured Collins fragmentation functions. A very good description of COMPASS ...
متن کاملTransversity and Collins Fragmentation Functions: Towards a New Global Analysis
A new, preliminary global analysis of the experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in SIDIS from HERMES and COMPASS collaborations, and in ee → h1h2X processes from the BELLE collaboration, is performed. The new data allow for a more precise determination of the Collins fragmentation function and of the transversity distribution function for u and d quarks, in comparison with the results of o...
متن کاملCOMPASS Results on Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries
New results on single spin asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised LiD target are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. Preliminary results are given for the Sivers asymmetry and for all the three “quark polarimeters” present...
